40 Years Celebration for the the São Paulo's Womens Defense Department at the Bandeirantes Palace
This Wednesday, September 27th, Palácio Bandeirantes hosted a special ceremony marking the 40th anniversary of the Women's Defense Department (DDM) of São Paulo, one of the country's pioneers in protecting victims of gender-based violence. The event brought together authorities, government representatives, professionals working in the protection network, and, most importantly, women who dedicate their lives to protecting, informing, and supporting victims of violence throughout the state.
Founded in 1985 in downtown São Paulo, Brazil's first DDM was a milestone in the fight for women's safety and rights. Since then, the network has expanded and evolved, becoming the largest in the country in this field. In addition to the growth in the number of police stations, the state has invested in technology and innovation to expand access to reporting and support for victims, such as online DDMs, 24-hour rooms, and the SP Mulher Segura app, which includes a panic button.
During the ceremony, Governor Tarcísio de Freitas signed a decree establishing a new division of the Civil Police dedicated exclusively to the defense of women, reinforcing the government's commitment to protecting victims. This initiative is another step in strengthening the network to combat violence, which already includes programs such as ankle bracelets for aggressors, the Purple August movement, and the ongoing SP Por Todas movement, which highlights protection efforts throughout the year.
Public Security Secretary Guilherme Derrite emphasized the importance of these ongoing actions, stating that "the signing of the decree is another step toward advancing efforts against domestic violence and ensuring that more women feel safe to report it." He also emphasized the crucial role of the women who work in the units, who, day after day, serve victims of violence with dedication and courage.
The event at Palácio Bandeirantes not only celebrated the past and achievements, but also reinforced the commitment to continue improving and expanding the women's protection network, ensuring they always have someone by their side, protecting, supporting, and welcoming them. Women who, for 40 years and to this day, have kept the movement to protect women by women alive, building a safer and more just society for all.

| | | As you read this, the DLCC is 40% behind our fundraising goal, and we still need a few donations from your state before Sunday's deadline. You may not think a donation of $7 or $25 will do much in the grand scheme of things, but the truth is, every dollar helps push our work forward. A $7 donation can help: → Elect Democrats in upcoming special elections in states like Florida and nationwide → Close the DLCC’s fundraising gap and stay competitive against our Republican counterparts → Push our message out to thousands of supporters in places like your community and beyond As an added bonus, donations made today through August 31st at midnight will be TRIPLE-MATCHED, meaning your donation is three times more impactful. |
So, what do you say? Will you seize this opportunity to elect state Democrats by making a $7 or even $25 donation ahead of August’s fundraising deadline? If you've stored your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will process immediately. |
