Lawmakers set off a five-alarm fire by conducting an extreme, mid-decade map redraw to try to unfairly gain five more congressional seats ahead of the midterms, at the expense of Black and Latino Texans. Our affiliate is already proceeding to challenge that discriminatory map in federal court. But we’ve also got to pay attention to states like Missouri and Indiana, too — two of the White House’s next targets. In Missouri, news could come any day now about whether the governor calls a special session to redraw the state’s congressional map. If he does, legislators could pass a map that would create at least one additional conservative seat. And in Indiana, Vice President J.D. Vance met with state legislators and Governor Braun earlier this month to ramp up pressure on them to redraw their maps. Additionally, legislators were invited to meet with Trump in the White House. A new map could flip up to two additional districts. Make no mistake: This is part of a concerted effort by conservatives to cling to power because they fear they can’t win in a fair electoral system. If they’re allowed to unfairly gain five seats in Texas, one seat in Missouri, and a few in Indiana, they could lock in control of the House of Representatives before the midterm elections even happen!
